Michael Sanflippo, Newark Boys Choir, Vermont ACDA guest condutor children's honors choirThe choir will be accompanied by Vermont concert pianist and composer Diane Huling. She has performed throughout Europe and North and South America as a soloist and accompanist. Bringing music to her local community is also important to Diane, and among many community projects she has produced a community concert series in Montpelier, performed live on Vermont Public Radio, and founded and conducted the Montpelier Chamber Orchestra Society. She has also taught music at Johnson State and at Dartmouth Colleges.

This annual event, first held in 1999 at the University of Vermont, moves to various locations around the state from year to year and features students whom school, church and community choir directors nominate to participate. Choir directors are members of the American Choral Directors Association (ACDA). The Middlebury College Music Department’s choral activities program is pleased to help with hosting this year’s festival, which is organized by Susan Cherry, Vermont ACDA Board Member. See: www.swifthouseinn.com  for pictures of rooms.  This is a B&B that encompasses three historic buildings, and I believe breakfast is included in the prices below (I forgot to verify that this morning, and awaiting an email reply).  All but 3 rooms are currently available for the days we’re talking about, but there aren’t a great number of rooms available!!

Reservations: 1-866-388-9925

With the discount:

Rooms will range from $121.50 – 157.50 (+ tax) in the Main House (quiet setting) or Gate House (on Route 7) for Thursday evening, and $139.50-166.50 for Fri or Saturday night. I suggest we make a reservation for the director & accompanist very soon in the main house. Not sure what budget will cover!

Middlebury Inn (right on Route 7 in the center of town, looking down over the town) currently has only about 8 rooms available for Friday evening.  The rooms in the Annex (behind the Inn, and quieter than rooms overlooking the town) typically have two double beds & a queen size sofa bed, so could easily accommodate 3 or more kids / adults per room.  Rates are $159 (+ tax) for Friday evening.  No meals included. No discount for us.    0.9 miles to campus (walkable)

see: www.middleburyinn.com

Reservations via the website or call 1-800-842-4666

There are also motels with much more basic accommodations (but quality of experience can be highly variable) and I would not recommend these for our kids and chaperones, but if money is an issue…  (Sugar House is preferable to Blue Spruce, but all you get is a very simple room with pretty thin walls…)

The Vermont ACDA announces plans for the thirteenth annual Vermont ACDA Children’s/Middle School Honor Choir Festival to be held May 4th and 5th, 2012 at Mead Chapel on the campus of Middlebury College. Our conductor this year is Michael Sanflippo, a teacher and director from the Newark Boys Chorus School in Newark, New Jersey. More information on our conductor is at the bottom of this invitation.

Applications may be viewed/saved, printed, filled in, and mailed:
view/download as .doc file     view/download as a pdf file

Members of VT – ACDA are invited to audition up to fifteen of their students to participate. These students should be in grades six, seven, eight, or nine for the 2011-2012 school year and have an unchanged voice. They must be members of their school choir, community children’s choir, or church choir. The singers you choose should be willing to be music ambassadors for excellence. We are encouraging directors to send both boys and girls. (We are hoping for about half and half.)

Again, this year, non – ACDA choral directors in Vermont are encouraged to submit up to eight members of their school or church choirs. There is a one – time $30 non-member fee to participate.

Students will be selected by teacher recommendation.  Please follow the application instructions carefully and do not miss the deadline of February 3, 2012. Failure to adhere to deadlines may result in your students not being allowed to participate in the 2012 VT ACDA Children’s Honor Choir. Be certain that your singers and their parents have fully read, understand and sign the statement of obligation. You should return a copy of the application to the parent for their future information. Teachers will be notified of student’s participation by February 24, 2012. A $35.00 participation fee will be due on or before April 27, 2012. Checks should be made out to VT ACDA. Food expenses are separate, and will be paid on site. More information will follow concerning meal costs.

We are excited about this upcoming event!  Remember to return the application form by February 3rd to Susan Cherry, 49 Frost Ave. St. Johnsbury, VT 05819.  You may also call (802) 748-2538 if you have any questions.

Sincerely,

Susan Cherry, Children’s and Middle School Choir R&S Chair

High School singers welcome at ACDA Mass. festival (Oct. 29, 2011)

As President of Massachusetts ACDA I am writing to invite the participation of Vermont HS singers in an exciting day-long choral festival on Saturday, October 29, 2011 at UMass, Amherst. This is an unusual honor choir because it requires no auditions. HS directors may simply honor their most outstanding singers–up to two for each voice part SSAA/TTBB–by naming them to the Festival roster.

Distinguished clinicians will conduct two separate ensembles: Lynnel Jenkins (Princeton GirlChoir) for the women, and Sal Cicciarella (U. Hartford) for the the men. The HS and University of Massachusetts ensembles will combine under the baton of Dr. Tony Thornton to perform a number to close the evening Choral Spectrum concert in the UMass Fine Arts Center. Student registration is $45, which includes music and two meals. Registration for directors is free, including a music packet, reading session, Conductors Chorus, and luncheon with colleagues. 15 PDPs are available.

Last year this Festival attracted students from several high schools in our neighbor states. We would love to involve students from any Vermont public or private school HS.

You can find more information on the MA-ACDA website:
http://www.massacda.org/ACDA_calendar.htm

There is a link to the online registration form.
Music will be sent out immediately upon receipt of registration.
Deadline: Sept. 30
$50 late registrations to Oct 7.
No registrations accepted after October 7.

Thanks for your help!

Harmony Explosion Camp, Worcester, MA (Aug 11-14, 2011)

To all members of the Vermont ACDA:

Please follow the link below to see an AMAZINGLY GOOD opportunity for any students who sing, and for any Music Educators who would like to improve their vocal skills and direction.  The Harmony Explosion Camp is a three-day immersion into a cappella singing.  I have attended the past five years, and find it is my annual “recharge.”  Please pass this information on to all students who should sing over the summer, which is of course, ALL STUDENTS.
Want to know more about it?  Ask me.
