Bella Voce presents BELLA FESTA!
Concerts Featuring Songs with an International Flair
Saturday, May 14, 8:00 p.m. First Baptist Church, 81 St. Paul St., Burlington, VT
Sunday, May 15, 3:00 p.m. South Hero Congregational Church, 24 South St., South Hero, VT
Bella Voce Women’s Chorus of Vermont will present music from a variety of European and Latin
countries plus an American folk song or two! Featured in the concerts will be a number of Latin
American pieces including an arrangement of Ariel Ramirez classic Alfonsina y el mar and the
premier of a newly-commissioned piece written for Bella Voce and their guest artists – two
outstanding Brazilian instrumentalists known as the Alturas Duo.
The Alturas Duo has been recognized as one of the most engaging ensembles performing in the
chamber music world today. The Duo plays South American and classical music, bringing together
the unusual combination of the viola, charango and guitar, and in doing so, creating passionate music
that moves at ease between the Baroque, South American folk rhythms and new pieces written
especially for them. The name Alturas is Spanish for heights. The Duo has performed in Brazil,
Canada, Chile, Bolivia, throughout the US and Puerto Rico including Carnegie Hall, Merkin Hall, the
Smithsonian Institute, La Guitarra California, the 34th International Viola Congress and has also been
a featured performer on NPR. The Duo has worked closely with many composers and has premiered
dozens of commissions, arrangements and transcriptions and is always in search of new music and
collaborations with other performers and groups such as Bella Voce.
The concert will also include the Mass #6 by Hungarian composer, György Orbán. This beautiful and
vibrant work, composed for women’s voices and piano, is filled with exciting harmonies and a variety
of rhythmic surprises! In preparation for their upcoming tour of Italy and Austria, Bella Voce will
also perform pieces sung in Italian and German including Verdi’s Laudi Alla Vergine Maria and
Schubert’s Psalm 23 – two of the most revered songs written for treble voices. They will also perform
the rousing Eastern-European folk tune, Niška Banja.
The May 14th concert will also feature the debut of Bella Voce’s High School Honors Choir. The
new choir was created this spring for the purpose of providing young women from across northern
Vermont the opportunity to sing exciting and challenging repertoire with women of all ages.
